Soldier for Hire 1

Soldier for Hire 1

The protrait for this book was decided with the face. The layout for this composition works in harmony like a three movement concerto. There are three sections to it. The first one on the left is done in a key of yellow green. The one in the middle in red and the one on the right a cool green on the figures in the armored car in front a yellow fire.

Soldier For Hire 2

Soldier For Hire 2

For this cover concept my editor had me repaint the large head of the hero of the story and to super impose a scar. I painted the large face of soldier for hire with a different face. I made him look battle scarred and I made him look tougher. On the scene below I used my own harmony for the occasion. I used blue and orange and yellow and purple. In fact, I used those colors on Khomeini’s face which, by the way, I got from a photograph from Newsweek. I then used the strange color on Khomeini’s f

Soldier For Hire 3

Soldier For Hire 3

This rendition of Soldier for Hire is done with two different harmonies for the bottom part. The one on the left is yellow, orange and red. The one in the middle and the right is blue, yellow and red. I used a very thin scumble to unify the light on the right and the left. This is done with a little tough of spy vs spy commando.

Apache Arrows

Apache Arrows

This painting is done by harmonizing Hal Reed's harmony chart with blue, yellow and red harmony. I mixed blue and yellow into green and then for the adjacent hues I add more blue for blue green harmony. The scene on the right is a dominant red one. Path of the eye graphics are strong in this painting. This painting was done with cold pressed linseed oil, Dammar varnish and gum turpentine. I tried to put a little wildness of a gunslinger in the left eye. There are two points of key interest; one i

Boothill Bounty

Boothill Bounty

This one, as in all of the paintings in this portfolio, was done from black and white photos. This is done in a harmony that belongs to Hal Reed's harmony system. I plan to switch over to using color photos to work from. I think my work will improve 1,000 times better. Also in my first two years I did 14 paperback and close to forty magazine illustrations.

Trial By Six Gun

Trial By Six Gun

This whole painting was done to heighten the tension on the cowboy lighting his cigar, The rest of the smaller scenes were done to represent other parts of the story. I painted Gun II out of a blue dominant hue wet into wet. The figures in bed and the bed itself are completely done with orange and it’s compliment blue to neutralize the croma with small traces of red here and there. The two smaller scenes are done more loosely and left incomplete intentionally. The technique I used to create har

Apache War Sundance.jpg

Apache War Sundance.jpg

This a rather simple painting. The design is quite strong and it is yellow, orange and red for the color grey. The coolness of the grey on the pants amde them look blue compared to its warm surroundings. All the shadows are painted in cold pressed linseed oil. The highlights on the flesh are painted in egg tempura. This painting is done with warm colors and glazes over the rock formations in the distance. This created the effect of a storm at night. The light effect is upon the head of Sundance.

Sundance

Sundance

This painting is about a half Indian who sets a stream crevice on fire. He is a very large and strong man. I gave him moccasins of chief Red Cloud and gave him a bear claw necklace like Chochese.

Klaw 1

Klaw 1

This painting was done out of a mineral spirits wash and raw umber in the style of Bernie Fuchs. It is a harmony of grays and warm colors. The climax of composition and contrast is his hook. This I felt show dynamic symmetry. The feeling of movement and the drama give this painting a swirling force of energy.

Klaw 2

Klaw 2

This painting is the second book of the series. The first cover I painted was of a man who had a hook for a hand. The second book I painted, as seen here, a man is missing his hand and has a gun attachment instead. This painting is also done with mineral spirits in the light and linseed oil in the shadows. The window is painted with a glossy linseed oil cover over a dried mineral spirit undertone to show the effect of holes in the glass. This medium is good for working small. You can see it has

Echos of Glory

Echos of Glory

This painting is a conquering of the problem of perspective. This is a story of how ex heroes use a tank to rob a bank. I did not get a real tank. I used a model. This was a very complicated painting. I would have liked to have had on more day on it. This book was for a movie that is a comedy. I tired to capture wild laughter and enthrallment on the people on the cover. The tank itself has just burst through the wall of a bank.

This protrait of FDR was done from a black and white photograph. This was painted in the technique of Rembrandt. This also had a tricky light problem to resolve. The photo of the work itself is taken at a slight angle accounting for the skew in presentation.

This is a portrait of Bill Clinton done in an original pose unique to the artist's imagination. This particular portrait was painted using the inspiration of several photos from different magazines.

Lee Marvin in the Dirty Dozen

Lee Marvin in the Dirty Dozen

This ia a portrait done of Lee Marvin. It too was done from a black and white photograph. The scence is from the movie the Dirty Dozen. It is done with the blue and orange mixed with them, sometimes warm and sometimes cool. The artwork itself was photographed at an angle accounting for the skew in its presentation.

Losers Keepers

Losers Keepers

In this story, Clyde Peterson is a professional soldier. Something in between a mercenary and a young privateer so in testing the concept I created his character dressed in a T-shirt and a head band. Loser’s Keepers is a montage with the symbol of death on the cross. The flesh of the model is painted with egg tempura underneath.

The Captains Vixen

The Captains Vixen

As in some of my other paintings online they have acquired cover spots. This painting speaks for itself with no further comment except to say that this painting was supposed to be set at sea with the inspiration of the old saying, "Red sky at night, sailor's delight."

Death Of A Scavenger

Death Of A Scavenger

This was my first painting for Tower Books. I painted this with a photograph of the capitol and on of the man. The idea of this one was to show brushwork and detail. I also used blue atmosphere. Also this was painted without harmony. The hat, the pipe and the building were painted with graphics.

Blood and Passion

Blood and Passion

This painting has an egg tempura underpainting under the flesh of the models. It was done by highlighting with white over raw umber. This painting is done in the style of VanDyck and has many baroque passages. The shadows of the trees tripping the arm and the leg of the man help create the mood for imagination of a fall scene. The effects of egg tempera underpaint is that it glows from underneath and that is truly the beauty in this work. The female model really contributed a lot to this cover.

Apache Warrior

Apache Warrior

Apache Warrior was done in red, yellow and blue color harmony. The red of of the native is neutralized with the blue and the yellow, while the highlights are yellow with a little touch of blue. The back ground is yellow and blue in various combinations. The red of the native vibrates because of this color contrast. The red bandana is the color accent.
